The MacBook Air is driving me nuts – in a good way! A techie person just like me is definitely aware that laptop designs always compromise size for their features and value. Back in the day, manufacturers never were able to make a laptop good enough to be a replacement for desktop computers given that they always failed to squeeze the entire unit into a small portable size. Something was always missing. So the way notebooks and laptops always worked was that it was always the case that the lighter a laptop was, the more compromised the features were. However, enter MacBook Air. Once the Air has come onto the scene, this perception has suddenly changed.

Basically, the MacBook Air is the latest Intel-based laptop created by Apple. It came out as a surprise because it is the lightest and thinnest laptop in the entire history of computing! It’s so thin and sharp you could attach it to a stick and chop a watermelon in half – but I wouldn’t recommend it. The shell casing is made up of shiny aluminum just like the MacBook Pro – however, this model is created with sleek curves. The keyboard lights up when used, something that usually does not come in laptops. This light-up feature is especially handy for night-time computing!

The Guts of the Macbook Air

The MacBook Air possesses an Intel Core 2 Duo chip mounted on a specially created package. It also contains a extra-small motherboard that permits the reduction of overall width. The LCD screen is elegantly emphasized by a backlight that contains LEDs - this allows the user to save battery life and allows for the screen to be dimmed much lower than CCFL screens – again, this is to better save battery life. Of course I never tested its strength by trying to jump on it, however by merely taking a good test of the product you notice that the keyboard feels solid. With this, you can rest assured that this is unlike those rampant kinds of light-weight laptops where after a short period of time, they bust and start to function worse than Teddy Ruxpin when the tape breaks.

Indeed, if you are a person who takes size, weight, and style into the equation when buying a new laptop then the MacBook Air is the best for you! You’ll get the same functionality of a bigger notebook minus the hassle of carrying along something which is too heavy and puts a crease into your shoulder and lap. After purchasing the MacBook Air I don’t have to worry about attending business trips in different places with a fat laptop because now I have a light-weight companion to join me anytime. Moreover, because of its sophisticated look, everyone who takes a look at my lap will most definitely praise me for being able to afford an elegant laptop when the truth is, it costs just as much as the other bulkier laptops around. And because it is Apple’s made, I can rest assured that I will get all the same features that makes the company popular.

Because of this, I was really excited to learn about the whole new GNOME 2.22 the latest version of the GNOME Desktop. GNOME has really created an amazing reputation among computer users and aficionados (especially free open source software buffs – FOSS) because their products are easy to use, provide stability, and exhibit first-class internationalization. The software supplies all the necessary tools like e-mail, web browsing, groupware, multimedia, file management, and games. Moreover, it is also capable of tendering a flexible and robust platform for software developers. Since the developers of this software received their accolades mainly due to the reliability of the product, GNOME 2.22 is focused on continuing what had been started; it’s programmed with massive amounts of bug fixes and a long list of user-requested developments.

Improving Your GNOME From the Inside-Out

Due to the huge amounts of improvement seen in this latest version of GNOME, there’s no way I can go through every tiny change, however, I’ll will be providing my thoughts on those features that really caught my attention. There is a application that they call Cheese which gives the user the opportunity to take photos and creates videos through a webcam. Once you’ve taken a picture, you can apply a whole variety of effects such as mauve, shagadelic, noir/blanc, and warp (shagadelic is the bomb!). Furthermore there is also an application known as Vinagre which is a remote desktop client that helps you sustain numerous synchronized connections and can employ Avahi in order to help you locate computers running VNC server software on your local network.

To better answer the need of people all across the globe, GNOME 2.22 provides support for 46 languages which includes; Arabic, Basque, Brazilian Portuguese, Bulgarian, Catalan, Chinese (China), Chinese (Taiwan), Chinese (Hong Kong), Czech, Danish, Dutch, Dzongkha, English (US, British, Canadian), Estonian, Finnish, French, Galician, German, Greek, Gujarati, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Macedonian, Malayalam, Marathi, Nepali, Norwegian Bokmål, Polish, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Serbian, Serbian Latin, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Tami, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian and Vietnamese.

Moreover, GNOME 2.22 gave me an opportunity to quit doing all that tiring mental arithmetic in order to find out the time in other places around the world. GNOME 2.22 is created with internationalization built into its clock. You can even tweak it by providing numerous locations from different locations around the world to see the local time and weather in that particular part of the globe.

Indeed, GNOME 2.22 (sometimes called GNU Network Object Model Environment) is everything that you need for a well-functioning computer based in the Linux operating system environment. I’m so amazed with this product that here I am writing a review about it – that shows you how much I can’t keep my admiration towards it to myself!

The Digital Audio Workstation from Cakewalk

For a quick background, Sonar 7 Studio Edition (Sonar 7 Producer Edition is also available) from Cakewalk is basically a digital audio workstation, which is a kind of virtual music studio that has almost unlimited potential in the ability to record audio as well as MIDI sequencing. Moreover, it can further mix and master tracks through the use of various effects, virtual signal processors, and software synthesizers. Come to think of it, when has Apple ever failed the Apple client base? Get the best of your Apple TV 2.0 and enjoy the best of entertainment in your living room.

Today we take a look at the Samsung HL-S5687W 56″ Widescreen 1080p DLP ($2100 at a Big Box Retailer). The TV has the newer color wheel that is supposed to be faster, bigger, and quieter. According to Samsung this will provide a smoother picture, even with fast motion, with more accurate color. The TV’s main features are:

• 1080p (via Wobulation)
• 10,000:1 Contrast Ratio
• Faster, Bigger, Quieter color wheel
• Dual HDMI inputs
• Only 16.3 inches deep and 64 lbs

One of the big knocks we have had against DLP technology is how it handles dark scenes. With a 10,000:1 contrast ratio we were hoping that we would see a major improvement in this area. We saw an improvement but we wouldn’t call it major. There is still material that is not visible with this TV. Just so we are all on the same page we used chapter 22 of Blackhawk Down as out standard. We are both very familiar with this material and use it for our tests. We thought the colors weren’t as vivid as the SONY SXRD but it was hard to say as we did not have the SXRD next to the Samsung during the test. We remember how the colors just popped off the screen with the SXRD and we did not get that from this DLP. Skin tones looked a bit washed out. This TV needs to be calibrated to get the best color out of it. Do not just buy it and leave it with the default settings. You will be very disappointed. After calibration the color was improved.

The TV does a good job with 480i/p, 720p, and 1080i. We though this TV had one of the best SD pictures we have seen. ESPN sports looked great but overly compressed sports looked worse on this TV. Los Angeles ABC is 720p and it did not look good on this TV. HDNET Hockey looked great! That proves what we have been saying all along. Sports at 1080i can be done but you need a high data rate. Movies on 1080i channels looked better than we have seen. Detail on the actor’s faces was highly visible and was a good as the SXRD. Detail in general was good on this TV.

As mentioned above Standard Definition looked great. This TV has a good scaler. Your standard DVDs will see an improvement just by connecting it to the TV.

Is the better color wheel all that it is cracked up to be? Well from the point of view of rainbows the answer is yes. Ara can see them all the time on his second generation DLP. He knows exactly what to do to make them happen. On this set there was nary a one. No matter how hard we tried we could not see a rainbow. Now we hate making statements like that because someone out there will say that they see them all the time. But it does not change the fact that we did not see them. Take that for what its worth. Samsung claims that the color wheel is quieter. Maybe it is but you can’t hear it over the fan anyway. Also, this is a bulb based light system so plan on spending $250 a couple to three years on replacements.

The TV has a very nice looking cabinet with hidden speakers. The speakers do not add or detract from the TV both visually or sonically. The remote is basic but provides easy access to key features of your TV. The menus are easy to navigate. One issue we have with the TV is that you can not get to an input directly. The source button toggles through the inputs that have something connected to them. You can label each input with DVD, DVR, etc so its easy to find the input you are looking for.
What we liked:

• Great HD picture (for sports and movies)
• One of the best SD pictures we’ve seen on a TV this size
• No Rainbows
• 1080p
• dual HDMI

What we disliked:

• Color was not as vivid as SXRD but still pretty good
• Some detail lost in dark scenes

Forget MovableType, Blogger, Textpattern, it’s all j-u-n-k compared to WordPress.

You get WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get for all you non-internet nerds out there) which makes it ridiculously easy to write posts. Just make sure to pick up the Extended Toolbar plugin until WordPress makes it default.

You get user roles. This is what WordPress says about roles:

The WordPress Roles feature is designed to give the blog owner the ability to control and assign what users can and cannot do in the blog. A blog owner must manage and allow access to such functions as writing and editing Posts, creating Pages, defining Links, creating Categories, moderating Comments, managing Plugins, managing Themes, and managing other users. The tool that gives the blog owner that control is the ability to assign a Role to a user; and, this article provides the details on those Roles.

I can feel that. If you’re running with multiple co-bloggers maybe give them access to write and edit posts but disable them from being able to manage plugins and themes. Stop those co-blogger saboteurs!

WordPress is sexy. Makes you want to run your fingers down its slick admin interface… probe the plugins deeply and firmly… yet gently. I won’t hurt you WordPress, I only want to enjoy you.

Boring stuff you should know: It’s written in PHP and MySQL - which is actually good but doesn’t really add to the sexiness factor. Just take this as a good thing - take my word… you trust me don’t you? Good.

Unlike a real life human, you can upgrade WordPress very easily without an major hastle. It’s basically clicking a button, no joke it’s that simple. Even a caveman could do it. If he knew how to read and not just grunt and smell like lamb shanks.

Want to know something else that’s sexy about WordPress? Ajax. Say that word with me. A-J-A-X. No it’s not the thing you use to clean your bathroom. This is useful because you do some editing in your admin panel and BOOM it’s updated. No having to hit save and reload and all that junk. It’s done REALTIME. Nice.

Want to add images to your blog posts? No prob. You can upload it right from the post instead of having to go to some other screen. It also automatically generates thumbnails that are linked to an image when you’ve uploaded it. Just drap-and-drop those little babies. And we all now how lazy the blogging folk are. LAZY. I say, in the old days, when we blogged we would have to go through 15 inches of snow…
